1. Start each day
with something positive.
2. Emphasize your
child’s strengths. Eliminate use of good and bad as labels when referring to
your child’s behavior.
3. Spend at least 20
minutes every day discussing your child’s interests, successes, and experiences
of the day. Ask focused questions like, what’s the best thing that happened and
what’s the not so good thing that happened today?
4. Play with and enjoy
watching your child play.
5. Praise your child
throughout each day. 80% positive rule is to “catch” your child demonstrating
positive behaviors!
6. When giving
directives, give no more than two choices if needed and make sure to use clear,
simple, and positive statements.
7. Use reward charts
for good behaviors when praise is not enough verses punishment for negative
behaviors.
8. Use of time out
should fit the minute for every year of age rule.
9. A loss of
privileges can be used from time to time for unacceptable social behavior and
non-compliance.
10. Be aware of your
personal tension and stress level. Take time out for yourself prior to
disciplining your child. |
